Principle Investigator

Dr. Huihui Qi is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California San Diego. She teaches a range of mechanics and engineering design courses. Her research in engineering education is to study pedagogical approaches that support engineering students' success, promote deep learning and critical thinking, and trigger and sustain students' intrinsic learning motivation, help students to become effective self-regulated learners through lectures, learning activities, assessments, and learning space design.

Huihui Qi

Current Lab Members

Kibo Chen is a first-year master student at UC San Diego majoring in mechanical engineering. Kibo has been a Project Assistant in the Qi Lab, helping to design and build physical demonstrations for the Statics and the Solid Mechanics class. He also assists with professor Qi's Sustainable Engineering Design Optimization research, analyzing the performance and environmental impacts of egg cartons. Kibo is interested in improving engineering education as well as designing more sustainable products, and he enjoys working in the Qi Lab.

Kibo Chen

Richard Vallejo Jr is a senior undergraduate student at UC San Diego majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Controls and Robotics. Richard assists with concept generation and manufacturing for inquiry-based learning activity models and demonstrations. He plans on pursuing a future career in engineering education at the high school level.  His hobbies also include spending time with friends, cooking new recipes, and creating artwork using spray paint.

Abhi Patel is a fourth-year undergraduate student at UC San Diego majoring in Aerospace Engineering. His research in the Qi Lab focuses on sustainable engineering, where he explores the design of reusable and environmentally conscious alternatives to traditional products. Abhi is also interested in advancing engineering education by creating clear, practical approaches that improve student learning and engagement. He is passionate about combining sustainability with practical engineering solutions to address both environmental and educational challenges.​

Jin-Ho Park is a senior undergraduate student at UC San Diego majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Jin-Ho assists with the Learn Smart program through statistical analysis and data visualization and interpretation. With a background in tutoring Jin-Ho hopes to assist aspiring engineers gain deeper understanding of course material from foundational mathematics classes to specialized engineering courses. On the side, he enjoys swimming, water polo, and golfing.

Tigran Grigoryan is a junior undergraduate student at UC San Diego majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Controls and Robotics. Tigran assists with the Hands on Mechanics project helping document existing and creating new learning models for the lab. Tigran is interested in helping more students think critically and deepen their understanding of engineering topics while retaining this knowledge long term. He aims to be an engineering professor in the future, helping the next generation of engineers prosper.

Grant Luu is a sophomore undergraduate student at UC San Diego majoring in Mechanical Engineering.  He assists with the Hands on Mechanics project and helps with documenting MAE 3 models, used to help others better learn concepts in the engineering field. Grant looks forward to helping others build up their learning foundations and better navigate their paths through academia.
