Instructional Assistant Training

Oral Exams Training Videos Guide

Our team has developed a framework for training teaching assistants and instructors to perform oral examinations. Click here to access the guide.

This asynchronous training consists of two elements: training videos and reflection questions. By the end of the training you will be prepared to:

  • Describe the format and purpose of oral exams

  • Create a welcoming oral exam environment for students that supports learning and success

  • Ask clear questions in an oral exam setting and provide appropriate responses and feedback to students both during and after the exam

Watch the series of short videos below on topics related to conducting oral exams and how they support learning. When prompted during each video, please pause the video to answer the embedded reflection questions on this Google form before continuing to the next video. A few important notes

  • There is no single right answer to these questions, but please take your time to reflect carefully on your answers to reinforce and consolidate your learning

  • Your answers to these reflection questions will also help the instructional team understand what is clear to the IAs about oral exams, and where further information or clarification might be helpful

  • You do not have to answer all the questions in one sitting; the form will allow you to return and edit your responses

1. Why use oral examinations?

2. Adopting an Equity Mindset

3. Managing Anxiety and Reducing Cognitive Load
